When we think of the word “to bless the Lord”, some people have difficulty comprehending its meaning. Especially knowing that God is the one who can truly bless a person. If only God has that sovereign authority, then how can a mere man bless the Lord. We find many passages in the bible, such a phrase is used. For example, Psalm 134:2 says, “Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!”. Also, Psalm 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”
The Psalms are full of blessings to the Lord. In fact, when we are commanded to bless God. We see this in Deuteronomy 8:10, saying, “And you shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
To begin, we need to understand the blessing with which we bless the Lord is not to somehow to help God or strengthen him in any way. Instead, it is an exclamation of gratitude and admiration, full of praise and thanksgiving. We can come to this conclusion because of the passages themselves. For example, if we read Psalm 100:4, we can recognise all the words used in them are of “praise and thanksgiving”, which also includes the word blessed. It says, “Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!”
We know that God blesses mankind in many ways according to His will and purposes. This is a great blessing. In return, we as people can bless God through our praises, worship, attitudes, actions, love for God and others, transformed life, and by living in submission to our Great God and Father in heaven.
Ephesians 1:3 tells us that God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing. How can we then not be in love with our Lord Jesus Christ, praising Him and blessing His name through the powerful work of the Holy Spirit in our lives? Amen!
