The earth and the heavens will wear out

In the beginning you (God) laid out the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. (Psalm 102:25-26)

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. (Ecclesiastes 3:1) For this world in its present form is passing away.(1 Corinthians 7:31) He who was seated on the throne (God) said, “I am making everything new! (Revelation 21:5) Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. (Isaiah 65:17)

God tells us that the earth will wear out whether we like it or not.  It doesn’t matter what you or I do to try and restore it, even if we are good stewards of it, the earth will still wear out and come to an end on the day he has appointed.  It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. (Acts 1:7)  What we do know is that we are much closer to the last day than ever before and must be alert and prepared.

When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.” Then he (Jesus) said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.” (Luke 21:9-11) “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.” (Luke 21:25-26)

We live in times where our world is fearful of what the future holds.  Every day, we are bombarded with news and commentary on the changing fabric of our world – natural disasters, pollution, diminishing natural resources and biodiversity, population growth, environmental issues and changing landscapes.  In the same way that a garment will eventually wear out, and cannot be repaired, the fabric of the present heavens and the earth is also subject to decay (Romans 8:21) and cannot be restored to its former natural beauty.

Wonderfully, there is good news.  God has made a way for all mankind to live with him for all eternity in the new heavens and the new earth which will never wear out but endure forever.  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son (Jesus), that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) Do not be afraid; only believe. (Mark 5:36)

As long as the(present) earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease. (Genesis 8:22) In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. (Job 12:10) Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27) For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)
